CyberWhist: Using the Classic Card Game as a Gateway to Computational Thinking and Coding

What is CyberWhist?

CyberWhist is a learning platform that transforms the strategic gameplay of classic card games like Spades, Bridge, Euchre, and Bid Whist into an interactive environment for learning coding and computational thinking. Learners play the game, then code the logic behind it—learning to automate strategies, build bots, and think like programmers.

Platform Features

🎮 Game-Based Learning

Learn through familiar card games that teach logic, turn-based reasoning, and structured rulesets.

💻 Real Coding Tools

Use JavaScript to write code inside JupyterLab-style notebooks. Future support includes Groovy, Solidity, and Python.

📘 Guided Curriculum

Integrated lessons and Learning Management System (LMS/LTI) support provide structured progression from gameplay to advanced coding.

🤝 Social Learning

Encourage teamwork and peer learning through community and collaboration features built into the platform.

🌐 Online & Accessible

Web-based access—no installation required. Easily deployable in classrooms, clubs, or mentoring spaces.

🛠 ️Flexible Framework

CyberWhist is designed as a flexible framework intended to support Extension-style learning environments. It is adaptable for use in community mentoring programs, youth organizations like 4-H and Boys & Girls Clubs, and as an on-ramp to coding and CTE pathways in classroom settings.

Who Is It For?

🤲 Mentors & Youth Leaders

Designed for community and faith-based mentoring programs to teach youth digital skills in a familiar format.

🌱 Youth Programs

Ideal for youth organizations such as 4-H, Boys & Girls Clubs, and afterschool programs. CyberWhist supports hands-on, culturally relevant STEM learning in both rural and urban settings.

🎓 Educators & Schools

Well-suited for introducing CTE learners to computer science, logic, and coding through engaging gameplay.

Classic and Meta Versions

🎴 CyberWhist Classic

Traditional card suits and gameplay introduce logic, strategy, and coding fundamentals. Includes visual tools like pie and bar graphs to support data literacy.

🧠 CyberWhist Meta

Advanced version with abstract symbols and logic-focused play. Reinforces computational thinking, negative number logic, and non-decimal number systems.

Want to Learn More?

CyberWhist may be available at no cost for select mentoring programs and educational organizations that are interested in piloting the platform with their youth audiences.
